Flames of Valor

Dragons.

They are regarded as mere myths in the world, so how does one begin to accept the fact that they are indeed alive and have existed by the sides of humans for thousands upon thousands of years? Few people believe in the ancient legends that tell of the remarkable beasts, but there are a few who know that dragons are more real than anything else – and these humans co-exist with the intelligent and powerful creatures in harmony. These chosen people have come to be known as Riders, and each individual shares a Bond with their dragon. This Bond is forged by a nameless energy that many could claim as magic, but nonetheless, it is a powerful energy that has the potential for both prosperity and destruction.

This energy – this power – that many dragons harness has been sought after for as long as humans have existed. In history, dragons were hunted and captured in masses by mankind, in an attempt to gain the power. Thus one by one, the legacy of the dragon slowly faded away.

Throughout the more recent ages, the majority of the large creatures have avoided contact with humans in general, either hiding away in the recluse wildernesses or skulking in the shadows the urban settlements. They were careful, they had to be careful, so that they would go unnoticed.

However, we have not been careful enough.

Twilight encroached the last of the azure sky and left a trail of warm colors in its wake, all while wisps of clouds danced around the gray silhouettes of the surrounding mountains. Large amber eyes viewed the scene with detached interest as their owner sifted through and collected his thoughts while soaking in the last warmth of the day. His golden scales gleamed under the gentle caress of sunlight while he lazily clung to the mountaintop.

“Elcidor, why are we here?” A faint feminine voice echoed from above near his right horn, but the enormous dragon did not attempt to answer. Instead he tilted his head downwards in response to the new presences that brushed against his sensitive senses.

He waited as they gathered slowly, one by one, until the blanket of night fell over the large lake below. The world was painted with the silver brushstrokes of the moon and stars, but only enough for a thin membrane of light to rest easily against the landscape. When a cool breeze slithered across the golden dragon’s neck, and yet no more figures appeared near the lake, he knew that it had been long enough.

Elcidor slowly released his grip from the mountaintop, wings still folded, until he abruptly shot them out and began using the powerful muscles of his wings to keep him airborne and fly gracefully down down down to the valley floor, and near the shimmering lake that had manifested there over millions of years. With practiced ease he swooped to a large clearing near the lake shore. He observed his surroundings, and after a while he noticed many shadowy figures approach his towering figure.  At last, when most had gathered – still keeping their distances from each other – he finally began.

It is time.

  1. Almost invisible in the darkness stood another dragon, pure black with green eyes that took in everything around him. The man stood still, but his eyes flashed back and forth to each other shadows in the darkness around them.
The man stood beside his dragon, under his leathery black wing, with his right arm brushing his tough, natural body armor.
His eyes were narrowed slightly as he took in the different shapes. They had been flying back from a brief search for food when the dragon had veered off course without warning or explanation and now here they had waited for uncounted hours watching as others appeared. The man exhaled and stretched his neck but continued to watch the area in front of them.
"What are they?" the question entered his mind and after a silence a low hissing and gravelly voice answered.
    "Others like us."

  2. One rider stayed a much greater distance than any of the other dragons. Though the dragon stood in the open, it was clear to all that they were on edge. The dragon, with reddish eyes and a build like a greyhound, paced back and forth, claws clicking on the small stones of the lakeside. His ears were pinned back against his head, and his teeth bared to the world. The gathering of dragons, though none of the other dragons were quite as aggressive as the hound-like dragon, was not at all calm, and therefor Ko felt no need to be either. The lean dragon had not seen another dragon in years- and it was clear from the scars, bright against his dark skin, the last meeting had not gone very well. The other dragons were apt to keep their distance from the snarling dragon- when one, a brilliant blue and tall dragon, came a bit too close, it was all his rider could do to keep her dragon from attacking. After all, she had the feeling the other riders would not take her side if a fight broke out.
Hazel, perched atop her small dragon with a sword in hand, was equal parts amazed and angered. She and her dragon had been on their way to the hunting grounds, so she could set up camp for the night and Ko could get his fill of deer. Out of no where, his dragon had veered wordlessly away from their path and towards the lake in the distance. Her questions, whispered into the mind of the great beast, had gone unanswered aside from a low growl. She knew he dragon too well to take the growl as a threat, so instead she gripped her sword a bit tighter and peered into the distance. At seeing great shapes in the distance that could only have been the species she both loved and feared, her first instinct had been to turn away to a shadowy place to land so they could approach from the ground. Ko had refused. Instead, the dragon called out, his deep roar like a throaty bark of an over-sized dog- both an introduction and a warning, to stay far away from the black dragon. Hazel could see five other dragons, spread about the landscape like droplets of water on the dirt, grouped together but so far apart.
After a many minutes of uneasy silence, Ko and Hazel watched with narrowed eyes as one of the dragon stepped forward, calling their so-called meeting to a sort of order. Ko let out a soft bark in reply, wordless but one of warning.

Jay and his dragon waited silently as one of the other of the dragons spoke to all of them. His dragon shifted her weight nervously in response. As soon as they had landed, they had nearly been attacked by dragon unlike one he had ever imagined, like a wolf with wings instead of fur. Even Jay could sense the palpable uneasiness though the lake area as each other rider looked to the others, with glares of uncertainty. Scorpio was the only dragon to keep completely still. Her scales, shimmering even in the nighttime light, was one of the only sources of light in the darkness. Forcing himself not to stare at the riders around them, Jay fixed his eyes onto the water below them, gazing at the reflection of his dragon's scales on the black water.
His words were quiet in his dragons mind. "These dragons...did you know they existed?"
Scorpio's words echoed back immediately, a soft growl between his temples. "I was not aware. Some of us gathered seem ready to attack, and others seem happy to see us. We will have to wait, and see how this plays out."

  3. "Jahile, you aren't being very co-operative right now," sighed a young man named Asbel as he sat atop a thickly-built dark green dragon, his thin black jacket keeping him warm from the cool summer night. His narrow eyes looked around him, wary of the other shadowy figures in the night. Apparently, they were also dragons. And they had wings.

"You lied earlier. I thought that you told me that dragons didn't have wings!” Asbel accused silently, snorting with disbelief.

"I wasn't lying. Dragons don't have wings," Jahile retorted easily.

"That doesn't explain why there appears to be other dragons with wings around us. Why are we even here? Did we cross the entire country to just go to some special dragon party?"

A soft, irritated rumble vibrated within Jahile's chest. He let his piercing emerald eyes flick back to his rider and gave his rider a fierce glare. Asbel only raised a slender eyebrow in response.

"I did not lie when I said dragons don't have wings, because these are not dragons. They are lizards with wings," Jahile replied cynically, “and as for why we're here, I'd much rather let you find out from the expert - ah, and here he comes in all his glory."

Asbel raised his head in time to see the moon blocked by an enormous creature that looked to rival the size of a mountain’s peak. Its scales flashed an eerie dark gold under the moon rays that lit up the shadowed night. Jahile watched in silence as the golden reptile landed in a large clearing, its wings spread to their full length. Asbel gaped, eyes still disbelieving.

“How is that a lizard?” he hissed incredulously, still staring wide-eyed.

“Just be quiet for once, Asbel.”

After a a few heartbeats, Jahile gradually moved forward, approaching the clearing cautiously – wary of those around him. He stopped when he felt close enough but far enough away in case he needed an escape…

Suddenly he was alerted to the golden dragon – Elcidor – once more.

    “It is time.”

Elcidor begun, sagacious eyes glancing over each and every figure in the shadows, yet he did not stir or make any other movement. He was a mountain; firm, steady, and immobile. After long and tense silence, the dragon continued. “We have gathered with our riders from both near and far at my call…but as many should know, it was not my choice, but I have felt it. We all have felt it. The cries of our kindred brothers and sisters. Their energies vanished and dispersed into the world.”

Elcidor paused and held the silence once more. Jahile let his eyes roam to the grass underneath his large feet, letting the words sink in until the gold dragon growled loudly, his voice ricocheting through the valley with intentional precision, “I will not let this continue. In the past, our kind were once hunted and used like tools by human, and it was for this reason why we have kept our presence secret…but now it can only be assumed that the humans know of our existence once more. And they have already started hunting. In order to protect ourselves and our riders, we must do something.”

  4. For many long moments, there was a shocked silence throughout the expanse of the clearing. There were no words, no movement. Hazel would even have bet that, for the expanse of those moments, no one even dares to breathe. The only sound to break the clearing was that of her dragon, Ko, making his stand.
With a stand of dominance, Ko raised his head. He pulled back slightly, his muscles tensing, before leaping into the air. The lithe black dragon spread his wings, and with speed unmatched by the other dragons, landed on a large boulder many lengths away. Claws gripped the stone, and his loud cry of anger called attention to himself. The stone was the only way he could match the height of the other dragons, or to even be seen against the long shadows. It was all Hazel could do to hold on, but when they landed, she too sat tall for a moment before boosting herself to her feet on her dragons back, sword still in hand. She stood tall as he dragon turned to look at the others around him.
”I have not seen trouble from humans or dragons in years. Until today, we were separate.” Ko growled, his growling voice echoing around the lakebed. ”How will gathering so anything more than alert more humans of our presence? Alone, we can hide.” His eyes bored into each other dragon in turn, ignoring the riders entirely except for his own, balanced on his back. ”If that weren’t enough, who led you to believe that we could possibly work together in any way? Dragons have always worked alone.” Ko’s words were calm, reasonable even, though the threatening growling of the dragon showed that there was more to his question of peace that just the ability to work together. He glanced up at his rider on his back, before folding his wings carefully against his side once more.

Jay could hear as Scorpio lashed her great tail behind her, sending the pebbles covering the ground tumbling. ”Easy, girl.” he said quietly, placing his hand on her long neck. ”He is only a threat if he attacks us, after all. Hear him out.” his voice was chiding, trying to keep the great beast from starting a fight he could see coming. Though the dog-dragons words were calm, he had been around dogs his entire life. He knew when there was danger of attack, by the tenseness of the moments, the height of the head and ears. This dragon did not look like he would take well to hasty words in his direction.
”He raises a good point, but I do not trust him, nor should I.” Scorpio complained quietly, telepathically to Jay before raising her voice to the crowd gathered. ”Hear him out, dragon. There will be no fights today. she called, her calm and feminine voice dominating over the group. ”He raises a good point, after all. When was the last time we saw any of our own kind? I have not seen one of us in years, and I thought myself the last. Though it pleases me to see others, it worries me to. A fight will only bring more attention to our kind.” She glanced around again, worried that she had said the wrong words, and only provoked more of a response.
”Good job, Scorpio. Though next time I suggest leading with a joke? Better for a large audience.” Jay’s words flashed telepathically through Scorpio’s mind, and the dragon gave him a sharp look.
”Listen, Jay. You do not want to be here if a fight breaks out.” she warned in return, turning her stoic gaze back to the other dragons around them. It was clear enough to Jay that there was more his dragon wasn’t telling him, and would never tell him, about these dragons. There was little he could do but wait for the largest of the dragons to continue his speech.

  5. The large black dragon broke his still form he had held and stepped forward with an snarl spewing an angry flash of flame in front of him as he beat the air several times with his huge wings.
"I have relied on no dragon before and I won't now!" his guttural voice sounded loudly across the lake, reaching every ear.
His Rider had stumbled several paces back from the forceful wind of his wingbeats and now he stood and stepped beside his companion in agreement, glaring around at the other forms.

A silver colored dragon crouched, his Rider astride him as they both listened to the outbreak of words from the dragons they hadn't known existed until just this evening.
"I have no wish to join with others on this journey, Jett." the girl's voice broke into the dragon's mind and he exhaled steam, showing annoyance.
"Neither do I, but if we have all been targeted by the same enemy maybe we should..."

  6. Elcidor left his gaze fall on each of those that spoke, but lastly on the larger, black dragon, that spewed fire in rage. He remained still and waited until her could speak again, choosing his words cautiously.

"There is a reason that has led each of you to come of your own wills. You may also leave for these reasons, too. However -" he said, letting his voice remain monotone - " this issue is much greater than any one of us alone. Mankind has grown in both numbers and intelligence, and their technology is our greatest enemy.

"You have pointed out valid flaws with the suggestion of keeping together, but may I also remind you that there are also many cons with staying separate."

"Like the fact they aren't as massive as you," Raya muttered to herself, aware that the golden dragon could hear her inaudible musings. "Some of those dragons are tiny...it would be easier to catch them. But it would take the entire militia to stop you...well, that one black dragon is pretty big too..."

Elcidor flicked back his eyes very briefly before letting them rest on the other dragons and their riders, ignoring her commentary. He continued with his speech, "However, I will not go over possible situations of staying apart, as they are only counter arguments to your previous statements. Instead, you should know of our past. And know that dragons have not always been beings of solitude. Our isolation in more recent centuries is caused by our nuturing, but it is in our nature to live with one another. Dragons once roamed freely, traveling in large companies as a single unit. We were feared and powerful. Our strength in numbers was cause for many human civilizations to worship us as higher beings, and succumbing to whatever we desired. However, at our peak of strength, a deathly plague swept the entirety of our race. Many humans at that time took advantage of that weakness and began thier attempts to tame and use us.This was why we separated and stayed isolated. Many thought that if we hid, then surely we would thrive on our own until the time came to join together once more. Our reasoning was flawed. Isolation only proved to weaken us. We had no allies to look to when we needed help."

Elcidor let his eyes settle on the dark, small dragon on the large boulder. "You are small and you can hide, but what if you're found? Mankind has the capability and facilities to capture you. "

He then looked over to the other larger, fuming black dragon, "You are like me. A sizable threat. If you stay hidden you will be fine, however, after a century, humans will eat up our territories and cut the food supply. We will either starve, be killed, or taken when we are at our weakest. You may not want to rely on others, but if survival is more important than pride, doing something now is imperative. "

He finally narrowed his eyes sharply and observed all the assembled dragons.

"If none of this matters to any of you, then you may leave and live your lives as you normally do. However, you should be warned that not only are we danger - but our Riders are as well."

  7. The black dragon sent a stream of smoke and steam several feet in front of him but folded his wings in a calmer manner.
Jett took a step back warily but remained listening. He had never roamed in a group before and being this close to so many others like himself made his talons curl in discomfort.

Volger, the black giant, raised his head and exhaled again before speaking in the strange dragon voice of hisses and deep, rumbling tones.
"You speak as though you had called us all here, but we all know it was something inside all of our spirits that led us to this place." With a single leap his wings sprung open and he was airborne, flying to one of the many boulders that surrounded the ancient lake that the group of dragons encircled. He landed with easy finesse on the rock and folded his wings again with the kind of dignity and poise that comes so naturally to the dragon species.
"Had we all only met by chance the circumstances may have been different, but this was not chance. The humans that dare try to capture and exploit our species and the power we possess are targeting us all. I have no desire to join with a group and rely on each other, but we were led here. Though a group is only strong if each works together." he looked back towards the large dragon, Elcidor, for a moment, then back towards each other dragon hidden in the shadows with patches of moonlight shining reflecting off their scales.

  9. Elcidor nodded his slowly, quietly thanking the dragon that spoke up.

"You are right," the golden dragon said smoothly, although it was clear to Raya that his mind sighed some. "We have gathered together for a reason larger than ourselves. And we must be prepared for what is to come."

Asbel stared dubiously at everything around him. Was he really listening to dragons talking about how humanity knew they existed and intended to harness their powers? And how he was in danger for being a Rider? Just want on earth was going on?

    "Jahile?"

"Shut up for a second," the wingless dragon muttered a reply. Then Jahile growled louder so he could be heard, "I have the most reason not to travel with any one of you, yet even I felt called here...I am Jahile, born of the wingless race. I despise flght, but I am willing to ally myself with others to protect both myself and my Rider."

To say Asbel's jaw dropped us an understatement. The fact that Jahile was willingly outting himself and the foreign teen on the spotlight was definitely bizarre....which normally meant something was serious. Jahile didn't act without some kind of motivation. This sent bundles if nerves shooting at Asbel's stomach. If Jahile was worried then he should be worried.
